Watkin Jones to build tallest residential building in Scotland
Watkin Jones, the UK's foremost developer in student housing and build-to-rent projects, has secured planning permission from Glasgow City Council for a landmark 36-storey development. This 784-bed structure, set to be the tallest residential tower in Scotland at 114 meters, will be named The Àrd.
The project is part of a larger initiative to revitalize the area around the 1970s-era Portcullis House at Charing Cross, Glasgow. The new development will integrate parts of the existing building, which previously served as an HMRC office but has been vacant since 2020 due to difficulty in attracting tenants.
Designed by the Manchester-based architectural firm Hawkins\Brown, The Àrd will contribute significantly to Glasgow’s skyline, with its stature only surpassed in the city by the 127-meter Glasgow Science Centre.
