About The University of Lancaster

Lancaster is ranked in the Top 10 in all three major UK university league tables: The Times/Sunday Times, the Guardian and the Complete University Guide. The University is also ranked in the Top 1% of universities globally.

The growing reputation of Lancaster is reflected by high rankings year-on-year in each of these league tables - The Times/Sunday Times (9th), the Guardian (8th), and the Complete University Guide (9th).

Lancaster is ranked 129th in the QS World University Rankings 2016-17, and 137th in the THE World University Rankings 2016-17. We were ranked 59th in the THE Best Universities in Europe 2016, placing Lancaster among Europe's elite universities.

Lancaster is also the highest ranked university in the North West for the employability of its students. Nine out of ten graduates get a job or further study place within six months of graduation.

Nine out of ten Lancaster students say that they are satisfied with their course according to the National Student Survey, 2012. Once again, this is higher than other universities in our region.

Around half a billion pounds has been invested in our Lancaster campus in recent years providing great teaching, research and social facilities. This includes a £20m sports centre, a £10m performance arts centre and the best student halls in the UK for the fourth year running, according to the National Student Housing Survey.

Lancaster was recently ranked one of the top ten most vibrant cities in the UK, thanks to its established arts scene and dynamic student population. It is one of the safest cities in the UK and one of the most historic.

Lancaster is ideally located to visit some of the best bits of Britain. Just to the north lies the Lake District. To the south are two of England's biggest cities, Manchester and Liverpool. To the east can be found the Yorkshire Dales National Park and to the west the classic English seaside town of Morecambe. Lancaster is two and a half hours by train from central London.

The University remains true to its founding principle that 'the truth lies open to all'. We achieve very high academic standards and recruit a socially diverse student population.

In addition to its Lancaster campus, the University has campuses in Ghana, India, Pakistan and Malaysia plus active links with China and the USA. This gives Lancaster global reach and provides students with many opportunities to study or work abroad.

With 12,000 students at our Lancaster Campus, the University is big enough to offer an exciting student experience but small enough to be supportive and friendly. All students join one of our nine colleges which creates a fun sense of competition and more opportunities to get involved in activities.

Over 90% of our research is judged to be internationally excellent and many of our subjects are ranked amongst the best in UK and global league tables. Our approach to teaching is research-driven and research-stimulated: we aim to create a culture of exploration and enquiry among our students..
